Want to begin strength training, but feel you need equipment, a complete plan, and a large block of time first? That day can keep moving away.

For a beginner, one sturdy chair and two or three simple movements can be enough of an entry point.

Make the goal smaller

CDC guidance for adults includes muscle-strengthening activity on at least two days a week, but it does not require starting at high intensity. Breaking practice into short sessions and building gradually for your own ability is often easier to sustain than filling an entire week at once.

Try this starter sequence

  1. Chair stands: Rise slowly from a chair and sit back down, prioritizing a stable movement.
  2. Wall push-ups: Place your hands on a wall, choose a comfortable body angle, and slowly press away and return.
  3. Leave some in reserve: Finishing with the feeling that you could do it again is a better habit-building start than exhausting yourself.

Safety matters more than speed

Use a sturdy chair without wheels and make sure the floor is dry. Stop for pain, dizziness, chest discomfort, or marked unwellness. If you have a recent injury or surgery, are pregnant, or have heart, lung, joint, or other health concerns, check with a health professional before starting a new exercise plan.

A question for today

Which five minutes could you reserve for these two movements?
