When hunger hits hard around 3 or 4 p.m., the first reflex may be another coffee or something sweet from the desk drawer.

Coffee can make you feel more alert for a while, but it does not always solve real hunger. Sweets can feel comforting quickly, but if your meals were already too light, you may feel pulled toward more food again soon after.
A snack is not a mistake. The goal is to let it support your afternoon instead of pushing you into the next round of grazing.
Look for two supports first
A steadier snack usually has at least one of these, and ideally both:
- Protein: plain yogurt, eggs, tofu snacks, milk, fish, or a small portion of chicken.
- Fiber and volume: fruit, vegetables, oats, whole-grain crackers, nuts, or beans.
Plain yogurt with fruit and nuts will usually hold better than only a sweet dessert. An egg with fruit is also more supportive than coffee alone.
Do not turn snacking into compensation
If lunch was too small, afternoon hunger is normal. A snack does not mean weak willpower. It means the plan needs a bridge.
Try a 10-minute check: drink water, step away from the screen, and see whether hunger is still there. If it is, eat one planned snack with attention instead of nibbling while working until the bag is gone.
Office-friendly options
- Plain yogurt or unsweetened soy milk with a small serving of fruit.
- An egg with cucumber, cherry tomatoes, or an apple.
- Whole-grain crackers with cheese or a small nut pack.
- If dinner will be very late, choose something closer to a mini-meal, such as tofu, vegetables, and a small staple carbohydrate.
Small note
If you often become shaky, sweaty, weak, or have palpitations when hungry, especially if you use medication that affects blood sugar, do not manage it only by trial and error. Ask a clinician. For most users, a good starting point is simple: steadier meals and snacks with structure.
Is your usual afternoon snack coffee, something sweet, or nothing at all?
